How Thick Should Your Countertop Be ?

It seems like a minor detail , but the thickness of material whether it’s granite, marble, or quartz can affect several aspects of your project like the cost, installation, and the overall design of the room.

Whether you’re looking to re-do your countertop or you’re having a new countertop installation put in, you likely have many questions and decisions to make.

After deciding on the right material, color and fit choices for your countertop, there comes the question of thickness.

This article will focus primarily on the two most common thicknesses of natural stone countertops in production and their suggested uses.

Two Types of Countertop Thickness – 2cm (3/4”) and  3cm (1¼”)

Can one centimeter really make that much difference?

The truth is, there are benefits to both options, and the decision will depend on the application and use of your stone.

Where they’ll be located, and what other elements will be around them.

Basically the right thickness not only ensures years of dependable use, but also helps your countertop maintain.

Its aesthetic appeal but the differences in thickness will change things such as the durability.

How much labor is needed, the pricing and so forth.

When to Use 2cm Countertop Thickness :

Two centimeter countertop thickness is ideal for a more Minimalistic , Sleek style.

For example- It’s perfect for Fireplace surrounds , Shower seating ,Wall cladding and Backsplashes

As it’s more decorative , weigh less and allows for design elements that have that high end look without the extra cost .

Here are some of the other things to take into consideration when offering 2 cm stone surfaces :-

1) DURABILITY

As discussed, less material means the countertop will be more responsible to cracks and chipping.

You’ll have to consider how much wear and tear your countertop will undergo .

For example ,If you are planning to sitting lots of bulky, heavy items on it, or you have kids who love to climb .

They will foresurely try to climb on the surface than there is a risk of damage to the beautiful countertop.

If you’re designing an eat-in kitchen with a breakfast bar, opting for the thinner 2cm thickness will require additional reinforcement.

Such as brackets, to minimize the chance of breaking or cracking for the overhang.

2) COST

If cost is a concern, 2cm thick countertops may be a better option, simply because there’s less labor and materials involved. Less material can save money on your material costs for the project, as well as the cost to transport, since 2cm slabs require less space and put less wear on vehicles. Labor costs may go down as well, depending on the stone – since the 2cm slabs are smaller and lighter weight, they can be easier for fewer workers to install.

3) EDGES

If aesthetics are the most important point, you should know that a thin strip of the same material will be applied around the countertop’s perimeter before the profile is cut in order to make the profile appear thicker. This will make the seams of the cut visible , make sure your client is aware about it. However it still creates a very popular beveled style that perfectly highlight many kitchens and baths.

When to use 3cm Countertop Thickness :

Three centimeter countertop thickness is the classic, luxurious profile for stone.

Countertops and ideal for horizontal places like countertops ,tables, bar tops, stairs, shelves, and more.

The durability of these thicker countertops also adds to their longevity, so you won’t need to worry about replacing or remodeling your countertops in the future.

Here are some of the other things to take into consideration when offering 3 cm thickness :-

1) DURABILITY

As expected, the thicker material can withstand more weight. For countertops, table tops, and other horizontal applications, there’s less concern about damage from setting heavy items on the surface.

In addition to be able to hold more weight, 3cm countertops can also have an edge profile that offers far more versatility in design and style than a 2cm countertop.

They are strong enough to be able to support their weight independently, so you don’t need to worry about having support pieces or brackets installed .

2) COST

It’s true that the 3cm option is more expensive for the material, it won’t always make for a pricier project overall.

In some cases, the installation process can actually be simpler, since the stronger slab doesn’t need to be handled as carefully.

As we discussed above ,it is more durable than 2 cm , so due to its durability it adds more longevity to the countertops.

So you won’t need to worry about replacing or remodeling your countertops in the future.

3) EDGES

It can be fabricated into a broad range of edge profiles to customize your look .

Also ,there is no need for a built up laminated edge to hide plywood underlayment and it provides the most strength thickness to any countertop .
